FAQ

Back to Docent Program

What is a Docent?

A docent is a teacher, tour guide and lecturer in a museum. As a docent, your duties will include:

  • Presenting the museum’s collections to visitors through guided tours

  • Bringing life to our heritage and history by telling the stories of Maryland African Americans

  • Encouraging young audiences to explore and discover, to think and to express themselves creatively.

Is there any special training required?

Docents are required to complete a 16 week course that includes an overview on African American history, museum permanent exhibition, tour guide techniques, and presentation skills. In addition to the rigorous 16 week training program, docents all participate in seminars that focus on museum emergency procedures, customer service and ADA and diversity training.

When does the docent training begin?

Docent training classes are held September-January every year. After completing training, we request that docents commit to 4 hours a week and one year of service as a Reginald F. Lewis Museum docent.
