Have you ever wondered what
a child sees? Do you take the time to wonder how the past
has affected their present and their future? Have you ever
wondered how the stories of our past reveal their world?
Have you ever wondered what a child sees?
Through A Childs Eyes is
the museums first art interpretive historical community
outreach project created especially by the youth of Maryland.
The general theme of this project is that the art work was
based on the museums three core content areas: Art
and Enlightenment, Labor that Built a Nation and Family
and Community. Historical stories of Marylands African
Americans were read to the youth, at which time they had
to visually create the stories through the medium of the
visual arts.
During this three week project the youth were taught the
following techniques: the importance of oral history, drawing,
collage, painting, contour, color mixing, thought process,
concepts, poetry/spoken word and above all tolerance and
patience. What you see before you is their interpretation
of the history, culture and art of Marylands African
Americans. Through their spirituality, resilience, joy,
vibrancy, the power of knowledge, values, principles, the
importance of family and cultural continuity, these youth
have expressed what the museum mission is all about.
